Why Choose A Canadian University?

For Canadians:

  • They’re nearby and accessible.
  • They’re affordable.
  • They offer world class education in a multiplicity of fields, in a variety of settings.
  • They’re interesting…and they’re interested in you.
  • For Canadians, it’s mainly your grade 11 and 12 marks and sometimes a personal statement that are needed.

For U.S. and international students:

  • They’re accessible through many ports of entry, with direct international flights to major Canadian cities.
  • They offer world class education in a multiplicity of fields, in a variety of settings.
  • They’re interesting…and they’re interested in you.
  • Most Canadian universities are very close to the U.S. border.
  • Scholarships are available to international students, including the Pearson award for outstanding leadership. Some have reciprocal agreements for U.S. students.
  • The Canadian dollar rests at about $.73, so you can deduct more than 25% from your US dollar costs!
    • Canadian schools are renowned worldwide, notably the Ivey School of Management at Western and Waterloo’s Software Engineering. See the Times Higher Education World Rankings for how your options stack up.
  • Whatever your field, you’ll find stars to teach you.
  • Canada is very multicultural, particularly the big cities, and as Oprah Winfrey said following her visit, “Canadians are just so nice.”
  • You can choose from among big city research universities in vibrant locations, mid-size in lively college towns, or liberal arts types in idyllic settings.
  • Canadian university applications are straightforward, can be done online, and SAT’s/ACT’s, AP’s and IB’s are acceptable. Non-native English speakers can expect IELTS or TOEFL requirements.

Note: Canada has traditionally distinguished between 4-year bachelor’s degree-granting institution called a university and 2-year diploma-granting school called a college or community college.  Nowadays, several “colleges” are offering certain bachelor’s degree programs and are an even greater bargain. There are four in the Toronto area alone.
